School Talk

We are a few weeks into school and I thought it might be a nice idea to talk about what is working and what isn't.

Thankfully most stuff is working.

Life of Fred

Belle:
***Life of Fred Beginning Algebra---I can not say enough good about this math program. Self learning, very little help or direction from math impaired mom (that's me) and no tears, complaints, or gnashing of teeth. Phew. Besides that, it is a solid math program that is actually fun and entertaining. Is your child tired of drill after drill. Do they master the drills yet have no clue on how to apply math in daily life? If you are frustrated with your math program I highly

***Learning Language Arts Through Literature. So far so good. No complaints from either of us.

***Apples a Day Spelling---just to fill in spelling gaps for a child that struggles with this. Lists don't work for her, so hopefully this learning of rules will help. We'll see.

Phia:

***Math U See-Delta. This is working well. She is in review mode right now, but it seems to help solidify the math facts. No complaints. When she finishes this book she gets to go into the Life of Fred Fractions.

***Learning Language Arts Through Literature---same as above.

As a group we do History and Science using My Father's World. This is going well.

The two older girls and I do BSF--John.

My littlest girl is working hard on her vision therapy. This is mostly all we do. I try to add a little writing in and occasionally we read something small, but the therapy is quite taxing on the eyes, so the reading and writing is a bit difficult. I really need to do some math with her. I have Right Start math, a very mom intensive program and I'm having a hard time fitting it in with therapy and helping the other girls.

The most difficult part of our day is just figuring out how to schedule it all in. As it stands, the girls get ready for the day, do their rooms, and independent work. Then we have lunch. After lunch we do History and Science and Bible together. That seems to be what is working right now. I feel like we are doing school all day long and I usually can't wait to get it done so I can do something I need/want to do. But usually by then it's time to get ready for dinner.

Oh, the one major change we did is move school from M-Th, to Tue-Fri. I'm taking Mondays to get ready for the week, and clean up the house from the weekend. Right now it's working.

How's your school going?
Susan

We're doing M-Th, but I'm thinking of switching to T-Fri for the same reason. And it's good to know that I'm not the only one who does Bible in the afternoon and not the morning.
